It's All Yoga Moves into a New Location with Many Green Elements

From downward dog to upward dog, it's all green at It's All Yoga. The Land Park yoga studio, which recently moved into a new location at 21st Street at X Street, made a commitment to be as green as possible in their new space. With help from the Green Yoga Association, owner Michelle Marlahan has created a truly eco-friendly culture.

"We incorporated some green practices in our former studio like using recycled paper and CFL's (compact fluorescent lights) for all the lighting, but in our new location we went a step further and were very mindful of the building materials we chose," Marlahan noted. "And being green is in tune with yoga because itís non-harming and you ask yourself where do the materials come from and where do they go?"

The Green Yoga Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring and caring for the Earth as part of yoga, provided the foundation for being green with conference calls, a web site and ultimately a handbook for studios participating in the green yoga program. From there, Green Sacramento provided the actual materials such as zero-VOC paint, Marmoleum flooring and PaperStone countertops. Both the inside of the studio and outside of the building are colored with zero-VOC paint, Marmoleum is installed in the bathroom floor, and the PaperStone countertops greet visitors as they enter the studio.

Once Marlahan committed to the program there was no going back. "It felt so good to make green decisions as we went along. Sometimes it's hard to break those old habits of running out to a big 'box store' for this or that, but when you do it feels right. Sure, it might have cost a little more, but it made us more mindful. We learned to cut out the fluff. It was absolutely worth every penny!"

And her students are beginning to take notice, a side benefit that Marlahan really appreciates. "The countertops are unique looking and our students ask about them, which leads us to talk about the flooring and paints. Through our efforts, people are becoming more conscious of choices they can make."
